Gary's Linear Paintings

These works explore line and repetitive pattern aiming to find the perfect line within a welter of imperfect lines. For example, how can one depict the sun with nothing but straight lines?

Gary's Landscapes

Imaginative landscapes blend familiar terrain with something uncanny.

Gary's Art Aimed at the Sublime

The aesthetic theory of the sublime concerns multiplicity that exceeds orderly pattern, yielding awe. Best explanation is Kant's essay "On the Beautiful and the Sublime"

My art explores one aspect of the aesthetic, not the beautiful, but the sublime.  Kant distinguished between the two feelings -- the beautiful being the perception of variety within order, and the sublime the perception of endless or enormous variety.  It's the difference between our responses to a flower and a mountainside of flowers.
